Portability, technology advances and concerns about radiation dose have given ultrasound a much wider role. The 4 Ways service can include travel into the community, skilled operators, provision of scanning systems and full reporting in a comprehensive service with no equipment to buy.

Aims of the 4WAYS ultrasound service:
- To provide patients with rapid access to diagnostics in a setting close to home
- Improve patient access to ultrasound across local communities
- Manage demand in primary care
- Improve patient choice and enhance the patient experience
- To ensure that 18 week referral to treatment targets are met by reducing waiting times for ultrasound
- Reduce first and follow-up outpatient attendances in secondary care thereby streamlining patient pathways.
- Promote the development of specialisation in primary care
- To develop a service that integrates with and compliments the existing local Radiology service providers
